In this cartoon, the student want to use technology something many middle schoolers are comfortable with using. In this time, technology is whats in and is what is relevent to them. When I look at "This We Believe" I feel this cartoon touches on several of the curriculum characteristics. Educators using multiple approaches, engaging active learning, and making it relevant. By using blogs, the students is exploring their creativity and communication. The student is using what is familiar for them and exciting for them. Middle school teachers using blogs or technology allows oneself to make the material relevent and engaging for the students. It is not the same mundane way to express oneself. The students get to express themselves in a creativity ways using pictures, videos, music and so much more.
Candice, I love this cartoon. It really hits home as to how technologically savvy kids are today. I think we often skip out on using technology as much as we should in the classroom, and in this we are losing a vital connection with our students. I do not think it is because we do not want to use technology, but because we feel unsure about how to utilize it correctly, or because we have to teach our standards for the "test" and technology isn't tested. However, as the Common Core gets implemented I believe that there will be greater opportunities to implement technology in to the classroom. This will help push us as teachers, and allow us to achieve the "This We Believe" characteristic of using "multiple learning and teaching approaches."
ReplyDeleteTechnology IS so very important in today's society. Everywhere you look there is technology and we as teachers have to remain current and revelant (there's that word again). I have a smartboard in my clssroom which makes using technology easier but I still feel I can and need to do more; this cartoon inspires me.
